Dear Heavenly Father, I come before you and lift Charley up to you. Thank you for being with him and his family so far. Thank you for their preasure souls and your Peace in their hearts. You alone are Worthy of all our praise. We worship You and give You all the Glory cause You are the one and only God, our LORD. You call us your children and gave us the right to talk and ask from You in Jesus name. So, here we are, to ask You for your healing upon Charley, knowing that You only can do it. Thank You for listening to us and you will do the best for him and his family. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
Charley has been to the hospital twice in the last few days. On Sunday afternoon, after church, Charley went to the ER at Children's Hospital because of a low blood count. There, he was admitted to 6N and got a blood transfusion. Fortunately, Charley was able to go home just after midnight.
Yesterday (Monday) evening, Charley had a 39-degree fever. Nehemiah and Charley's cousin, Josh, took him back to Children's Hospital. Charley was admitted again for observation. He is still there, but should be discharged today.
GOOD NEWS! On Saturday, Charley began Dr. Jack Taylor's highly recommended Metabolic Assessment Program (http://www.biotor.com/). In just 2 days, his appetite returned! Charley has been asking for various foods...this is the first time in months! He had two dinners last night!
While it will be very beneficial for Charley to be able to eat (and not rely on his feeding tube), this creates a new challenge for Deborah and Nehemiah. With his feeding tube, Charley's parents have been able to control Charley's nutrition and have been giving him mostly blended fruits and vegetables. Now that Charley wants to eat, Dr. Taylor has suggested that Charley only eat organic foods and limit his sugar and flour intake. The challenge will be finding tasty recipes (and the time) to make for Charley.
Charley had a bath in the hospital last night and declared that he felt "SO COMFORTABLE!" Praise God for bringing this feeling to Charley, even in a hospital room!
Prayer Requests:
* Charley's body will continue to respond to the chemotherapy so that his bone marrow can be cleansed.
* Charley's growing appetite will cause him to maximize his nutrients.
* Deborah and Nehemiah can obtain the resources necessary for Charley's new diet without issue. May they have the means to pay for these costly foods and find assistance with making food for Charley.
* Deborah and Nehemiah can have some time to feel relaxed...perhaps in the form of a warm bath that Charley said was so comfortable!
Hello Friends,
Our family had a chance to visit with Charley Thursday afternoon. Our kids enjoyed drawing/coloring with him and watching some new TV shows. Charley really enjoys other children and feels at home with them right away. Charley would get quite uncomfortable at times with pain in his belly, being tired, and feeling hot. As I prayed for his stomach pain I thought how brave he is and how loved he is by both his parents and His Heavenly Father.
The Cherngs are currently getting daily blood work reports. The best news is that his blast count and WBC went down today after the first dose of chemo yesterday which indicates the chemotherapy is helping. The WBC decreased from 16,000 to 8,800 while the blats in peripheral bloods dropped from 11,234 to 3,680. Deborah and Nehemiah are pursuing dietary and nutritional therapies. Charley is handling the NG tube feedings better now with a new pump. Deborah works very hard to blend/puree his special diet as well as to get up three times a night to feed Charley (he is able to sleep through).
Continue to pray for the Lord's gracious hand upon Charley - for healing, to ease any pain in his belly and legs, effective dietary changes.
Pray for peace, guidance and financial provision as they seek alternative therapies. Ask for rest for Deborah and Nehemiah and whatever support they need.
Thank you for standing with them.
In His hand,
Linda
Pastor John’s Message:
Pastors John and Leigh visited Cherngs Thursday morning. In addition to praying for Charley, Pastor John led a fellowship with the parents. This was a refreshment to Deborah & Nehemiah in the midst of managing the crisis. The parents are nourished by the following sharing:
1. We are the salt to world:
a. Charley has been the salt to the body of Christ.
b. Church is the salt to Charley and the family. Each member’s prayer and care add up the salt ingredient until it radiates the flavor through the trial of Charley’s illness.
2. Treasures in Jars of Clay. II Corinthians 4:7-13 (Holy Bible).
The Cherngs are “hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.” The joy of hope of Charley’s fighting leukemia is our strength.
3. The thorn in Paul’s flesh & God's Grace is Sufficient. II Corin 12:7-10.
Charley has disease which is attached by Satan. Nevertheless, “My grace is sufficient for Charley, for my power is made perfect in weakness” and “Christ’s power may rest on Charley” (12:9). This is the personal testimony of Apostle Paul, one of God's greatest servants.
Dear Friends of Charley,
Charley's challenge just got tougher. Charley spent last night in the hospital because of on-and-off fevers. His spleen and liver are still enlarged and his blast levels are getting worse. Charley's bone marrow test results show 78% blasts in his bone marrow and 35% in his peripheral blood.
Charley's parents also learned that the clinical trial they were waiting for is permanently closed to patients with leukemia. Instead, Charley will receive a low intensity chemo treatment at the clinic and at home as an attempt to slow down the progression of the leukemia. In the meantime, Deborah and Nehemiah are looking into nutritional means of helping Charley.
Fortunately, Charley is on his way home now and certainly will feel happier there than in the hospital. However, today has been a tough day for Charley and his parents, grandmom and those who are hands-on helping Charley's family. Charley and his family need you and your prayer group to pray for Charley's recovery.
Prayer Requests:
* Continue to lead Charley on the road to win the battle of fighting leukemia. Lord, your power is greater than any and we pray that you heal Charley.
* Please provide Deborah and Nehemiah with a clearer path as they work to help their son through integrated treatments.
* Bless Deborah and Nehemiah with the all that they need from their family and friends. They were so fortunate to have a dear friend by their side today. We pray that you continue to bring support to them.
Hi my friends,
I know that so many of you always remember Charley in your prayers, but if you could, would you drop in another prayer for him tonight?
For some unknown reason he has been fighting a fever all day today (Sunday)...quite high this morning (39.7C/103.4F) later on (38.5C/101.3F) and then 37.6C/99.6F. The doctors don't want to fool around with this and Nehemiah is bringing him in to Children's Hospital Emergency Room right now. (9:30 pm) The doctors want to be able to treat him there.
The parents have not heard any results from the bone marrow test which was done on Friday. The spinal tap test came up negative, but they still do not know why he has numbness around his chin.
Thank you so much for your prayers.
Maddy
To Charley's Friends and Family,
Charley's dear cousin, Maria, has been with Charley for four weeks, but went home last night to start summer camp. Nehemiah writes:
Maria has gone home with parents yesterday evening after her 4-week stay. She will start 4 weeks of camp next Monday. The contribution of her care on Charley is marvelous. She and Charley embraced together prior to her departure. Before her coming, she was not sure she could help Charley as Charley needed. Her dad, Eric, told her to just treat it as mission work and ask Jesus helps you. Last Friday night, we had bedside prayer. Maria thanked the Lord let her meet many wonderful people, including Mrs. Le and Mrs. Figueras. She is also thankful for making an intimate friend with Charley. Charley was touched so he requested to say a prayer afterward for the healing of someone special to him.
The following was written by Maria on Friday, July 20, 2007:
Dear Charley’s friends,
On Monday Mrs. Le came to see Charley and brought us all to the Hebert Candy Mansion in Shrewsbury. She bought us ice cream and i got Monster Mash and cherry moose tracks, Jennifer got monster mash and so did Mrs. Le. I had the greatest time at the candy mansion. After that we went to the Christmas Tree shop. There I got my very first pair of Crocs and Charley got two CD'S. One was about dinosours and the other one was about addition. The CD'S were songs about the subject. My crocs were dark blue. I also got Crocs pins for them. I got two puppies and two panda bears. Charley has crocs too and they are light brown, tan. He also has pins too, two Mickeys, two penguins and two hearts.
One day I had bad belly pains, just like Charley has sometimes. So Deborah gave me some medicine, but it was a pill...I had never taken a pill before. I was scared, but because I was so inspired by Charley I just took it. YES! my very first pill ever reached my body!
Today (July 20th), Charley had some procedures at Children’s Hospital. It all went well. You see, all they really did was taking samples of Charley's bone marrow and spinal fluid. We hope you pray that the tests come back good.
Please pray for Charley's spleen and liver shrink back to their normal sizes and pray that Charley's chin numbness is just a sign of detoxification and not his cancer coming to his chin area.
Bye!
Maria Latta (Charley's cousin )
Yesterday, Charley had his bone marrow aspiration and his spinal tap. Last night, the doctor called with preliminary results for just his spinal tap, which did not find any leukemia in his spinal fluid.
Praise the Lord!
The bone marrow test results will be posted as soon as Deborah and Nehemiah talk to the doctor.
Hi my friends,
I have a mixed message about Charley...what we can see and what we can't see. He looks strong and healthy. I was over there last Friday and on Monday. Charley and his cousin were on his deck playing with a bubble machine and chasing and catching bubbles. Charley's cousin, Maria, has been staying with the family for the last few weeks. God certainly sent a special blessing to Charley and his family when Maria came to stay with them. I think she is 8 years old (maybe 9) and she and Charley play together all the time. She is just so gentle, kind and considerate. They are such good friends.
I talked with Charley's mom this afternoon(Thursday). They went to Boston yesterday for Charley's red blood transfusion. He has had swollen lymph glands in his neck which have been painful for him. His WBC is 4000, Charley's count is usually lower, so they want to investigate this, his glands, and his liver and spleen. I asked his mom if there was anything I could do, and she said, "Pray."
.... all things are possible with God.
Maddy
This Friday, Charley will undergo a bone marrow test and intrathecal therapy at Children's Hospital. Both may indicate the cause of Charley's recent enlarged spleen and liver, and the frequent numbness and pain in his chin. Through the intrathecal therapy, doctors will insert chemo into Charley's spinal fluid to stop and/or prevent any central nervous system involvement in leukemia.
There is a chance and a hope that Charley's symptoms are part of the healing process, as the destruction of cancer cells can be toxic.
Please pray that Charley remains brave in his fight as he deals with these tests on Friday. Please ask the Lord to be with his doctors as they work to find the best treatment plan for Charley.
Friends of Charley,
The Cherng family continues to feel grateful for the generous donations of so many - from close friends and family members, from those who have been through similar cancer treatments, and from others who don't know Charley at all. With your donations, Deborah and Nehemiah are able to continue their non-stop devotion to Charley's health. Please continue to pass along Charley's donation letter and prayer requests so that Charley's care can be as smooth as possible. (If you need a fundraising letter sent to you, please contact ErinLe@Alum.Dartmouth.org.)
