NG Tube and Platelet Issues, Karaoke, Maria's Blessing

Dear Friends of Charley,

I spoke to Nehemiah last night and there is a lot to update you on. Charley had clinic at the Jimmy Fund this week on Thursday. A doctor who is relatively new to Charley impressed with Charley's condition. He asked Deborah and Nehemiah to continue with Charley's nutritional supplement as things seem to be going well!

On Thursday evening, Charley's NG tube became clogged. As the nurses suggested, Charley's parents tried to unclog it with soda. However, this did not work, so Charley ended up back at the Jimmy Fund on Friday for both routine platelet transfusion and a new tube. It was a tough day for Charley. First, during the transfusion, he felt sharp pain in the area of his lower cheek. While therfe was no clinical explanation for this, it could be a hypersensitivity to the transfusion. Morphine reliefed Charley evetually. When Charley's blood wrok came back, his platelet level had not increased from the initial transfusion. So the doctors ordered a new bag and the new platelet transfusion went smoothly. Charley is always so brave, even when he undergoes the discomfort that comes with having a tube inserted to his stomach through his nose. However, he did talk to his parents about what he has to do to be able to get rid of the NG tube. He seems more determined to eat enough to keep his body and mind healthy and to get rid of the tube!

Charley has not experienced much nausea in the past several days. He has chosen many foods to eat and even chose his favorite snacks from his food cabinet. Charley also suggested going to eat at a favorite Chinese restaurant. In the past, he has only had take-out from the restaurant, but he enjoyed having a family meal at a restaurant!

Charley has been blessed by cousin Maria's visit. Maria has spent the last couple weeks with the Cherngs and plans to stay for a couple more weeks. She has been a complete blessing as she entertains Charley, supports him through his numerous clinic appointments, and understands Charley's occasional changes in mood as he takes medicine, feels yucky, or acts like a typical 6-year old. Maria and Charley have enjoyed singing and dancing with the new karaoke machine. When I spoke to Nehemiah last night, Maria was lying next to Charley to help him fall asleep. I have had the honor of meeting Maria and I can tell you first-hand that just like Charley, Maria has the blessing of touching so many around her. She is so kind and wise beyond her years. Thank you to Maria for being such a good role model for and supporter of Charley!
